While there is no specific national law termed "eve teasing," it is addressed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), such as:
Section 354 – Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty.
Section 509 – Word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman.
Section 294 – Obscene acts and songs.
These offenses can lead to imprisonment and fines.
Section 375, IPC – Defines rape and prescribes punishment, including life imprisonment or death penalty in certain cases.
Section 376, IPC – Punishment for rape, which may extend to life imprisonment or death penalty, depending on the severity.
Section 376A to 376D, IPC – Address various forms of sexual assault, including gang rape.
Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 – Specifically protects children from sexual offenses.
Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 – Provides a civil remedy for women who are victims of violence in the home. It includes protection orders, residence orders, and monetary relief.
Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 – Prohibits the giving and taking of dowry.
Section 3 & 4, Dowry Prohibition Act – Punishment for giving or taking dowry, including imprisonment and fines.
Section 498A, IPC – Punishment for husband or relative of husband subjecting woman to cruelty.
Section 304B, IPC – Dowry death; if a woman dies within seven years of marriage due to burns or bodily injury, and it is shown that she was subjected to cruelty or harassment by her husband or his relatives in connection with any demand for dowry, it is termed as dowry death.
Special Marriage Act, 1954 – Provides a special form of marriage for interfaith and inter-caste couples, ensuring legal protection.
Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 – Prohibits the marriage of girls below 18 years and boys below 21 years.
Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 – Also provides relief to women in live-in relationships, recognizing them as aggrieved persons.
